What is HOS?

Hours of Service

Hours of Service (HOS) are federal FMCSA regulations that limit the number of consecutive and cumulative hours a commercial driver can drive and be on duty. HOS rules are designed to prevent fatigue-related crashes and are tracked automatically by ELDs.

How it works

The core HOS rules for property-carrying drivers are: an 11-hour driving limit after 10 consecutive hours off duty, a 14-hour on-duty window from the start of a shift, a 30-minute break required after 8 cumulative hours of driving, and a 60-hour/7-day or 70-hour/8-day cycle cap that can be reset with 34 consecutive hours off duty.

Who uses it

All commercial drivers subject to FMCSA jurisdiction. HOS rules are enforced at roadside inspections and during DOT audits.

Why it matters

HOS violations generate points on a carrier's CSA score, trigger FMCSA investigations, and can shut a fleet down. They're also the most common cause of driver-facing compliance frustration.

In Rig Terminal

Rig Terminal's ELD and compliance module track HOS in real time, alert drivers before violations, and flag carriers on the dispatch dashboard when a driver is approaching a limit.
